Frequently Asked Questions
Where do you meet?
We meet in the library of the Camboon Primary School on Forder Road, Noranda. Enter the car park through the main gate, find one of the many parking lots and then walk up the access ramp adjacent to the first (administration) block. The Library is in the block straight ahead and can be entered through doors on both left and right sides. We provide additional lit signage to assist in directing you to the library.
When do you meet?
We meet on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday nights of every month, except for an extended break over the Christmas and New Year period (Please refer to the Club Calendar). The meetings start promptly on time at 7:00pm, so plan to arrive 15 minutes early to ensure you are greeted and seated.
What do you do in a meeting?
A typical meeting consists of a guided session of impromptu speaking opportunities, followed by prepared speeches. The prepared speeches are from Toastmasters International training manuals. Each has objectives to help the speaker develop their presentation skills. Each speaker and presenter is evaluated, and given feedback to reinforce their positive development and opportunities and strategies for further improvement.
Will I be asked to speak at my first meeting?
You will be invited to participate, but you may decline if you wish. We understand that public speaking can be daunting at first, so you are given every opportunity to become familiar and at ease with the meeting format and the club members around you before taking that first step.
How much does it cost?
Membership is remarkably cheap considering the value you gain by joining. We charge a joining fee of $65. This covers the room hire, membership to Toastmasters International and access to either printed manuals or the online "Pathways" training programme. Each six months, in April and September, there are further dues payable to Toastmasters International, and we charge $120 for each period. The first six-monthly payment will be adjusted pro-rata for when you join.
How soon will I become proficient in public speaking?
Everybody progresses at their own pace. There is no pressure, but plenty of opportunity, so if you are keen and ambitious, you can fly through the training. If you are hesitant and reluctant, we will coach you through slowly.
Who will help me through my first few speeches?
We all will, but at Toastmasters, we will assign a mentor, a more experienced member, who you feel comfortable with, to help you through the initial stages, and advise you on your individual progress, speech assignments and answer any questions you may have.
Are the fees tax deductible?
We recommend you consult a qualified taxation accountant, as everybody's circumstances are different. Expenses for legitimate personal development training, that is directly related to earning income, should classify as deductible expenses.
Are there membership vacancies available now?
Absolutely! We are always looking to grow membership of the club. There is no cap on membership numbers and guests and visitors are always welcome. It is never too late to start, and even experienced speakers will benefit from the Toastmasters training program.
